Frequently Asked Questions
Where are you located?
We work in partnership with IronFox Farm, located at 705 South Blauvelt Avenue in Sioux Falls, South Dakota as well as the Spirit of Joy Church located at 2208 W La Quinta Street.
Do I have to drop off my food scraps? Can you pick them up for me?
We only offer drop offs at two locations listed above. We hope one day a pick up service will exist in Sioux Falls.
Does it cost money to participate in the pilot?
As a nonprofit, we rely on grants, community donations, and volunteers to operate. We ask those composting with us consider making a donation of $10/month. All donations are tax deductible.
When and how do I drop off my food scraps?
Drop off hours are seasonal and will change with the onset of summer and winter.
At our IronFox Farm location, between April and November (summer hours), we are on-site on Wednesdays 5-7PM and Saturdays 8-10AM. Between November and March (winter hours), we are on-site Wednesday 3-5PM and Saturdays 10AM-12PM. Spirit of Joy location is consistently 10-11AM on Sundays.
At both locations, we offer a drop off service in two ways:
Visit us during our on-site hours listed above and for a bucket swap. You simply drop off your bucket and take a clean, lined one for the week ahead.
For hours not during our on-site times, we offer an at your leisure drop off option. With this option, just drop your scraps in the garbage bin at the compost site and grab a liner from the green mailbox. This option doesn't offer a new bucket but does give some nice flexibility to drop off when you are free. During winter, this option is 24/7 but during summer, we limit the at-your-leisure options as we have less flexibilty to leave food scraps outside in the heat.

Do you sell any materials to get started with composting?
Many community composters opt for the five-gallon SoDak Compost bucket which can be easily swapped each week. These cost $10 and are yours to keep. We recommend all buckets are kept lined using BioBag liners. While during the bucket swap, you will receive a clean, lined bucket, you can also keep some on hand for $10 for a 25-pack.
For those not creating as much food scraps, we also sell smaller three-gallon kitchen countertop buckets for $15. Liners for these are $5 for a pack of 25.
What materials are accepted? What aren’t accepted?
Refer to this guide to determine what can and can’t go into your compost bin. If you have a question about whether something is acceptable, get in touch.
Do you offer volunteer opportunities?
Yes! We are always in need of extra hands. Please reach out to us at info@sodakcompost.org to discuss volunteer opportunities.
